Diagnose Human Emotion, Drug Liberally

What if we had drugged Beethoven? Would we have the masterpieces he left us? Fortunately, the DSM-IV was not around during his time because the chance is very good that they would have thrown the book at him.
If Beethoven, because of his volatile moods (Bi-Polar Disorder), tendency to be reclusive (Anti-Social Personality Disorder & Paranoia Personality Disorder) and impatience (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) were told my a modern-day psychiatrist he needed medicated, we would likely have nothing but a shell of a man left and no Beethoven’s Fifth. If Beethoven’s dark moods were stamped out, would he have ever arrived at his magnificent last symphony, Ode to Joy? How have we turned the very state of being human – emotion, angst, the peaks and valleys – into a disorder? (more…)
